NTN offers technology that allows candidates to take the NTN public safety exam at home while being monitored by proctors. This will maintain the integrity of the testing process while ensuring the safety of our candidates and employees.



The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea has an exciting opportunity to join the Carmel Firefighter/Paramedic team. The City has five Firefighter/Paramedic employees on staff and is filling one vacancy at this time. The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea is seeking a highly motivated Firefighter/Paramedic that wants to actively support our Village by providing a very high level of service to our residents. Over the past year through the pandemic, our Firefighters/Paramedics have been vital to our community providing essential services and have exemplified courage, saving lives and inspiring hope on the frontlines every day. Some highlights include:

In February 2021, the Firefighter/Paramedics participated in regional training through the Monterey County Health Department to become trained and certified to administer the COVID vaccinations.
In March 2021, the Firefighter/Paramedics administered the vaccine in conjunction with our fire department during a community vaccination clinic. The clinic was opened for qualified recipients and homeless based on the State Tier categories.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and multi-cultural skills, have a strong commitment to community involvement, as well as the ability to exercise good judgment, self-restraint and tact in dealing with a variety of issues and situations. Carmel-by-the-Sea is proud to be one of the few municipalities that provides hospital transport services. Firefighter/Paramedics live and work in the shared fire station with peers from the City of Monterey Fire department that provide fire services along with coworkers and supervisors.


Job Requirements

Age : 21 at time of hire

High School Grad/GED : High School Diploma or GED

Valid CALIFORNIA State Driver`s License : California Class C; satisfactory driving record

Academy Certification :
Paramedic: Must be a licensed paramedic in the State of California with the following certifications; Advanced Life Support (ALS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life (PALS), Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Intermediate Trauma Life Support (ITLS) and must be able to become accredited in Monterey County as an EMT-Paramedic within 90 days of employment. Candidates currently attending Paramedic school may submit applications for review.

Firefighter: It is highly desirable that candidates have successfully completed a basic California State Fire Marshal accredited academy or possession of Firefighter I or II certificate. Completion of Firefighter I certification within 12 months of hire.

CPR: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Card

CPAT: Possession of a valid (within 12 months of hire date) Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) at time of conditional offer.

Applicant Screening: Candidates who successfully complete the application screening will be invited to complete a Personal History Questionnaire.


Personal History Questionnaire: The PHQ is an online pre-employment background questionnaire. The department may use questionnaire as a screening tool.


Oral Board Interviews: The most qualified applicants on the basis of the application process and PHQ will be advanced to a virtual oral board interview to comply with COVID-19 guidelines.


Chief?s Interview: Candidates who successfully complete the Oral Board Interviews will be invited to a Command staff interview.


Formal Offer of Employment


Fire Academy (Approximately 16 weeks): TBD


Probation: 18 months from the date of hire per the MOU.

This will maintain the integrity of the testing process while ensuring the safety of our candidates and employees. The written exam is called ?FireTEAM? and must be completed prior to the closing date of April 30, 2021.


The applicants who clearly show that they most closely meet the needs of this position in terms of training, experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will continue to participate in the recruitment process. This process will include evaluation and initial screening of the standard on-line City application to determine which candidates progress to the next phase.
